INTRODUCTION

The author comes from a long line of Country People intensely interested in their surroundings. Through this excellent book Mr. Jessup makes us aware how the needs of the local inhabitants have been met by each generation. Space does not allow mention of all the sources of information drawn on, or the people who have contributed so much to make Watton what it is today. Mr. Jessup is also well known for his illustrated talks on natural history and local topics. Watton has always had a sturdy independence and been prepared to work for what it needs. It surprises me that a town with such a small population as it was in 1920-1930 could support three large shops virtually selling the same goods.

The post war years saw rapid changes, depression and hard times. Now the many housing estates cater for a much larger population and factory units create employment. The period covered has seen many changes, not all for the better. The book will have a wide appeal, not only to residents, but also to those living in the locality.
